James McConnell has signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The 20-year-old is now set to join Ajax on a season-long loan. He will undergo a medical before moving to the Dutch giants.
McConnell had interest from other clubs in Europe, but Ajax have won the race for him.
Ajax manager John Heitinga was Arne Slot’s assistant last season and recognised his potential.
McConnell is one of the best talents to emerge from the Reds’ youth academy.
After impressing with his displays for the youth sides, the midfielder earned his senior debut in a Europa League game against Toulouse in 2023.
He has made 13 appearances for the club and impressed on his Champions League debut against PSV Eindhoven in January.
Liverpool have sanctioned numerous departures during the summer transfer window.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarrell Quansah, Luis Diaz, Tyler Morton, Darwin Nunez and Ben Gannon-Doak have all exited Anfield.
However, a few more players could also end up leaving the club before the September 1 deadline.
Harvey Elliott is attracting interest from RB Leipzig, while Kostas Tsimikas has been linked with an exit.
