Liverpool's latest round of contract talks has given us a fascinating insight into their priorities.

The club made a lot of bold calls in the transfer market last summer, and it not appears as though they are going to do the same with regard to their squad. No one's position is safe as far as we know.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are currently in line to receive offers to extend their stay on Merseyside, and the feeling between the two parties is positive, according to Fabrizio Romano.

However, there's more to take from those talks than insight surrounding the two players. It's also who Liverpool are choosing not to engage with, that ought to be brought into the main spotlight.

Is Mac Allister at risk of leaving?

In the summer of 2023, the Reds made four midfield signings - Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister backed up the two aforementioned stars in Jorg Schmadtke's legacy as Liverpool sporting director.

The Japanese international was placed on a four-year deal compared to the other three's five-year deals, primarily because Endo was already pretty close to the age of 30; his contract was befitting.

A decision will need to be made was to whether he stays beyond 2027, although you feel as though his time at Liverpool might pitter out, whether he secures a small fee or eventually leaves for nothing.

It's already been reported that Gravenberch and Szoboszlai will hopefully agree new deals to extend their stay beyond 2028, which is excellent news. But where might that leave Mac Allister's future?

The Argentine is also contracted until 2028, and until recently, you'd have been forgiven for claiming that he could be an asset Liverpool could afford to let go. Real Madrid have been sniffing around him for a while and a transfer fee nearing £100m was being mooted, which is tempting to say the least.

His start to the season hasn't been good, and his finish to last season was disappointing as well. You would have been hard-pushed to identify the problem, he just wasn't quite like himself on the pitch.

Suggestions that Liverpool were considering moves for midfielders like Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson gave the impression that the 26-year-old could make way to freshen up the squadron.

However, in his last two matches - against Aston Villa and Real Madrid - he's been on top form once again, and a lot of fans' doubts have now gone. Of course, he needs to maintain these standards for the foreseeable, but suggestions that he should be sold now appear to be wide of the mark.

And yet, the reality is that Liverpool aren't rushing to extend his deal. Nothing has been ruled out yet, but the current forecast is that he won't be around for as long as Szoboszlai and Graveberch may be.

Given he's older than the pair, it might be sensible for Liverpool to just sit and observe him for this season - after all, his deal is until 2028, so he's secure for now. But the Reds can't sit on the fence for too long, a call on his future will need to be made eventually. Right now, it's not looking great.
