Liverpool Squad Overhaul Looms as Iraola Era Nears

Liverpool are approaching one of those summers where a football club has to decide what it still believes in. The badge remains the same, the stadium remains the same, but the dressing room may soon feel very different.

According to Ian Doyle of Liverpool.com, “Andoni Iraola has verbally agreed to take charge of Liverpool,” with the Spaniard now expected to replace Arne Slot after a deeply disappointing defence of the Premier League title. Doyle reports that Liverpool have “pinpointed the former Bournemouth manager as their preferred candidate,” and that compensation will not be an issue after Iraola’s exit from the Cherries.

That appointment, if completed as expected, will bring more than a new voice. It will bring a new judgement on a squad full of unresolved futures.

Iraola Arrival Signals Liverpool Reset

Doyle states that Iraola “has been offered a two-year deal” and is expected to bring Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper with him from Bournemouth. There is also, as the report notes, “speculation linking ex-Reds midfielder Thiago Alcantara with a return,” although the coaching structure remains unconfirmed.

That uncertainty matters because Liverpool need clarity quickly. Iraola’s football is usually aggressive, energetic and brave. This squad, after a season of drift, may need precisely that. Yet it also needs trimming, refreshing and, in some cases, ruthless decision making.

Alisson Choice Could Define Summer Plans

One of the most important decisions concerns Alisson Becker. Doyle writes that Juventus have been “strongly linked with an approach,” even though Liverpool triggered the option to extend the Brazilian’s contract until the end of next season.

The key line, though, is that “sources in Brazil” indicate Alisson “has opted to snub advances from Juventus and remain at Anfield for at least another season.” That would be a huge lift for Iraola. In a period of change, keeping one world class figure in goal gives Liverpool stability.

It may, however, complicate matters for Giorgi Mamardashvili, with Doyle reporting “suggestions that the goalkeeper’s representatives have made him available on loan to Italian clubs.”

Midfield Questions Demand Answers

Curtis Jones is entering the final year of his deal, and Doyle notes that Inter Milan and Galatasaray are both interested. Liverpool, he reports, are “demanding more than £30 million” for the academy graduate.

That is the uncomfortable arithmetic of modern football. Jones carries local meaning and tactical intelligence, but contract pressure weakens sentiment.

Harvey Elliott also returns from what Doyle describes as an “underwhelming loan spell at Aston Villa,” while Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa have “long been linked with potential exits” due to limited opportunities under Slot.

Alexis Mac Allister may be the most fascinating case. Doyle writes that he “endured a disappointing campaign in midfield,” yet a new tactical structure could easily revive him.

Experience Drain Raises Stakes

With Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate all leaving on free transfers, Doyle rightly points to Liverpool being “stripped of considerable experience.” That makes Joe Gomez’s situation important too, given he is now the club’s longest serving player and is also nearing the end of his contract.

Iraola’s first job will be to work out who has been fading, who has merely been misused and who still has another Liverpool chapter left.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, Doyle’s report underlines the scale of the reset. This does not feel like a normal managerial change. It feels like the club are being forced into a proper reckoning.

Alisson staying would be the best possible starting point. After losing Salah, Robertson and Konate, Liverpool cannot afford to strip out every senior pillar at once. Iraola will need leaders, and Alisson remains one of the few players who carries unquestioned authority.

Curtis Jones is the harder call. Many fans will want him to stay because he understands Liverpool, understands Anfield and has often performed in big moments. Yet if he will not extend, the club cannot drift towards another free transfer problem. That has happened too often.

Mac Allister deserves patience. Last season was poor, but form can be tactical as much as personal. Put him in a better pressing structure, give him clearer passing lanes, and he could look transformed.

The bigger concern is whether Liverpool act decisively enough. Iraola may be exciting, but excitement needs backing. If this summer becomes another half rebuild, supporters will see through it quickly. The squad needs leadership, pace, defensive security and proper contract discipline. No more muddle. No more slow decisions.
