Newcastle United returned to winning ways on Monday night as they beat West Ham United 1-0 at the London Stadium.
The Magpies were desperate for a win to make sure they meet Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final with momentum, and they got it against the Hammers yesterday.
It was far from a vintage performance from Newcastle United, but their fans won’t be bothered as they ended their poor run of form to climb to sixth in the Premier League standings.
In a largely uneventful first-half, Thomas Soucek blazed over from close range and Harvey Barnes went close with a header. Then in the 63rd minute, Bruno Guimaraes broke the deadlock by turning in Barnes’ lofted pass.
West Ham failed to find an equaliser as Newcastle held on to secure a narrow 1-0 victory.
Guimaraes netted the decisive goal, but the local press were more impressed with Kieran Trippier’s performance.
The Chronicle Live gave Trippier 8/10 rating, praising his leadership skills during the game.
Their verdict read: “Kept everything together with some important leadership including a moment in which he ensured Joelinton cooled down after a midfield clash. MOTM.”
Trippier had 82 touches in the away match and completed 47 of his 56 passes (84% accuracy).
He registered two key passes and completed 100% of his dribbles.
The 34-year-old was excellent in defence, with two clearances and three interceptions to his name.
Trippier lost the ball on 15 occasions, but he also created a big chance and won 50% of his duels.
Fans will hope the experienced right-back continues his good form on Sunday when Newcastle will aim to end a 70-year-old wait for a major trophy by beating Liverpool in the Wembley final.
