Lucas Beltrán is still waiting for his first goal since returning to River Plate after a lean year at Valencia. He has rejoined the club he left in 2023 with strong numbers and is working to rediscover that level.

According to Superdeporte, he departed Mestalla a year after arriving without scoring at home, his three goals all coming away. Two were in the Copa and one in the league, a fine strike at the Metropolitano that hinted at more in Madrid, but it never came, in a side that struggled for goals and control.

His second stint began under Chacho Coudet, who left after a poor run. Ponzio now leads a strong squad, with a back four of Montiel, Otamendi, Martínez Quarta and Acuña. Further forward are Thiago Almada, Correa, Driussi, Santos Borré and Beltrán, with Arambarri, who has not started well, Andrada and Vera in midfield.

Even so, Beltrán has yet to score. His influence has grown in recent matches, including wins over Argentinos Juniors, Banfield, Rivadavia and Tucumán, plus a draw with Vélez. He provided two assists against Rivadavia and Tucumán to help Ponzio’s side secure victories in testing circumstances.

A defeat to Huracán last time out has revived doubts. Beltrán is intent on ending the wait with a goal. Will he find the net against Sarmiento on eight October?
