Grêmio pay half of debt to Uruguayan club over Arezo deal | OneFootball

Grêmio have paid half of a debt owed to Uruguay’s River Plate relating to Arezo. The remaining balance is due by 30 September.

According to Globo.com, the club transferred 100,000 dollars, about R$ 519,000, last week, with a further 100,000 dollars still outstanding.

The liability stems from December’s renewal of Arezo’s loan to Peñarol. River Plate own 50 percent of the forward’s economic rights, entitling them to a share of the 400,000 dollars received by Grêmio.

In June this year, Peñarol bought the centre-forward outright, committing 3.1 million dollars, R$ 16 million, to be paid in three annual instalments in 2027, 2028 and 2029.

River Plate had notified FIFA over the unpaid first instalment and requested a transfer ban against Grêmio. That risk is currently removed in relation to this debt, but if the second instalment is not paid River Plate may refer the case to FIFA again.
