Lucas Bergvall agrees new Tottenham deal after summer uncertainty | OneFootball

Lucas Bergvall has signed a new Tottenham contract, the club said in a statement on Friday. The 20-year-old midfielder’s future had been uncertain over the summer.

He started the opening two matches, a 3-0 Premier League loss at Brentford and a 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Charlton. He was withdrawn at half-time after an error for Vitaly Janelt’s goal, and has not featured in the last two league games against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

On the pre-season tour to Australia and New Zealand, head coach Roberto De Zerbi initially said any player not happy should leave. After a frank talk on tour, Bergvall received a clear development plan and De Zerbi later set out the Swede’s best position.

Bergvall said Spurs are building something and called it an exciting time, which is why he is happy to extend. De Zerbi added that his desire to improve is clear and his best football lies ahead.

Bergvall joined from Djurgarden in 2024 and extended in April 2025 to 2031. Spurs see this latest deal as reinforcing his importance now and long term.

Competition for minutes is fierce with Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, Rodrigo Bentancur, Conor Gallagher, James Maddison and Archie Gray in midfield. Even so, he impressed in 2024-25, winning multiple player of the year awards after arriving from Sweden at 18, and will hope to kick on now his future is settled.
