Claims that Sunderland have agreed a deal for Lucas Bergvall are understood to be wide of the mark, with no agreement in place.

Football Insider had suggested the Black Cats submitted an offer before striking an agreement, with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest also linked. That does not reflect the club’s current position.

Bergvall, 20, is valued at around £50million. Tottenham are likely to seek the strongest terms. He joined from Djurgården in 2024 and later signed a long-term contract running until 2031, placing the London club in a strong negotiating position.

He can operate in several central midfield roles and is regarded as one of Sweden’s most promising young players. His age, technical quality and potential resale value appear to fit Sunderland’s recruitment model, and the Black Cats are expected to add further quality before the summer window closes.

Thomas Meunier remains Sunderland’s only senior arrival at the time of writing. Florent Ghisolfi has indicated a more measured window after last summer’s extensive overhaul.

For now, any notion Sunderland have a full agreement for Bergvall can be dismissed. He is not currently heading to the Stadium of Light.
