It hasn’t been an easy start to life at Paris Saint-Germain for Lucas Chevalier (24). The Frenchman arrived from formative club Lille OSC in the summer, replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italian had just helped PSG win their first ever UEFA Champions League title, however, with his contract expiring, Les Parisiens looked to cash in and so he was sold to Manchester City. Chevalier had already been identified as his successor, having consistently impressed at Lille, and having worked his way into the France national team. He made his debut for Les Bleus earlier this month.

However, it has not been an easy start to life at the Parc des Princes for Chevalier, whose performances for his new club have often been middling. Luis Enrique has already leapt to the defence of his new goalkeeper.

“Do you remember Donnarumma? You (the media) killed him for four years. He was always criticised. When you are a goalkeeper at PSG, you have to learn to live with that,” said the Spaniard.

He added, “I am very happy with Chevalier. When we recruit a player, we are thinking about the long-term.” The scrutiny has certainly increased, naturally. Speaking to TéléfootChevalier has now evoked his start to life at PSG.

“You expect [your life] to change, because you want it to. You target that. My life has changed. I have left the cocoon. I am scrutinised from top to bottom. You realise that it is ruthless,” said the Frenchman. “These are things that you have to handle, even if you’re prepared and aware of what is to come, when it happens, you have to try and move forward calmly.”

Chevalier added that he is now starting to approach matches “more calmly” than he did at the start of the season.
