Lucas Perri’s proposed switch to Torino is on hold while the Leeds United goalkeeper recovers from a quad injury. According to Leeds Live, Torino have prepared a loan with an option to buy and remain hopeful following James Trafford’s club-record £40m arrival at Elland Road.

Perri missed the final two friendlies of United’s USA tour and the pause is intended to aid a smoother medical once he is fit.

Torino, not alone in tracking Perri, targeted him early in the window as Leeds sought a new number one and they looked to fill their own vacancy. First-choice Franco Israel is sidelined for a number of months after shoulder surgery. Their season starts in eight days.

With Perri’s forthcoming exit, Leeds are searching for a back-up to Trafford. Orlando Gill of San Lorenzo is on a shortlist, though reports of a formal offer are wide of the mark.

The 26-year-old was Paraguay’s first-choice at the World Cup this summer, keeping two clean sheets in five games and saving penalties from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade in a Round of 32 shoot-out win over Germany.

He was man of the match against France in a fiery 1-0 last-16 defeat after a string of saves. His contract runs until December 2027 under the South American calendar.

Trafford’s signing makes it four changes of number one in the last two years, after spells for Illan Meslier, Karl Darlow and Perri. All three will be playing for other clubs next season.
