Manchester City have extended their record as the away team with the most Premier League wins at Manchester United.
Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal in controversial fashion as City claimed victory in the 199th Manchester Derby on Sunday, as the Norwegian slid in on the hour. Haaland’s goal was allowed to stand despite Enzo Fernandez being in an offside position.
VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for offside – and determined that Haaland was in an onside position. The VAR also deemed that while in an offside position, Fernandez didn’t play the ball, despite attempting to make contact with Josko Gvardiol’s cross.
It was a fixture filled with big refereeing decisions at Old Trafford, including Phil Foden’s first-half red card. The Manchester City midfielder was sent off after only 23 minutes for a petulant kick at Bruno Fernandes.
Despite their disadvantage, City maintained a perfect start to the season through Haaland’s much-debated winner, and secured 10th away win at their biggest rivals in the Premier League era. In the process, City have extended their record for the most-ever wins by an away side at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
