The club said in a statement that Lucas Stassin has sustained a myofascial injury to the right adductor longus and will miss Saturday’s meeting with FC Barcelona.

He was injured against RC Deportivo de La Coruña. The initial expectation is a three to four week lay-off, with a return after the international break and doubts over Levante on 11 October. He will also miss Belgium Under-21 duty.

The Belgian forward had been gaining prominence under Luis García Plaza, stringing together several starts and positive displays before this setback.

Earlier in the season he came off the bench at RCD Espanyol to score a classic poacher’s goal. Sevilla finished with 10 men after Arouna Sangante’s contentious red card and still took a point in Cornellà.

He also played a key part in the win at Riazor, starting the move for Miguel Sierra’s decisive strike. Stassin beat José María Giménez in midfield, drove forward and shot, and Sierra converted the rebound.

His recovery will take place in Seville, where club medics and physiotherapists aim to aid his progress and, if possible, shorten the timeline. Caution will guide the process despite optimism around his age.
