Luciano Vulcano has taken his first job since leaving Sunderland, becoming AC Monza’s youth head coach after a spell out of the game.
According to Sunderland Echo, he joined last summer as Régis Le Bris’s assistant head coach, then left by mutual consent after Le Bris said the structure was not the right fit.
Monza will be in Serie A next season after promotion, and the role offers Vulcano his first taste of head coaching. The Italian also aspires to lead a senior side in time.
This week he reflected on Sunderland in a social post, calling the experience unforgettable, expressing gratitude, and saying he hopes to return to work in the country and league one day, thanking Sunderland AFC.
Sunderland initially chose not to replace him, but have now added former Southampton and Portugal centre back José Fonte to the coaching staff. He starts on Monday before the club’s pre-season tour of the US, his first coaching role since retirement.
Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said Fonte brings top-level experience and energy to a staff thriving under Régis, and that his leadership should add value as the club looks to push on in the Premier League and in Europe. He added they are delighted to welcome him.
Fonte will work alongside Michael Proctor, Alessandro Barcherini, set-piece coach James Brayne, goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler and chief analyst Isidre Ramón Madir.
