CD Castellón announced on Wednesday the death of Luis Alonso Poncela, ‘Cela’, at 89, and offered condolences to his family, friends and the wider club community.

He represented the club for 11 seasons and made 357 appearances in Primera, Segunda and Tercera, the third most in its history.

Revered by supporters as the great captain, Cela led the side through one of its standout periods. He featured in three promotions, two to Segunda División and one to Primera.

He captained the team that reached the 1973 Copa del Generalísimo final, now the Copa del Rey, played at the Vicente Calderón, where Castellón lost to Athletic Club.

That generation, and Cela’s leadership, remain etched in the club’s memory. He was among the most important and emblematic figures in Castellón’s history.
