According to Superdeporte, new Valencia sporting director Braulio Vázquez said Ernesto Valverde was never a genuine candidate, with the coach telling him he needs a break.

Vázquez was presented on Wednesday, shortly after the club confirmed Javier Aguirre as head coach. He then toured radio studios, addressing the squad, Gayà, Mestalla and recruitment.

Several names were linked to arrive alongside Vázquez, among them Mendilibar and Arrasate.

On Valverde, Vázquez said they speak every week or two, even during his spell at Athletic, and that they remain close friends. They previously coincided briefly at Valencia.

Vázquez recounted asking whether he planned to keep coaching, and Valverde replied that he needed to rest. He added he already knew Valverde would not return for now, so the move was never realistic.

Vázquez joked that Valverde is off taking photos and left open whether their paths might cross one day at Nou Mestalla. Valverde has opted to take at least a year out.
