Luís Castro cut a terse figure after Grêmio’s defeat to Vasco on Saturday, arriving late for his press conference and bristling at scrutiny of his work. He faced a series of questions he said felt more like assertions.

According to Globo.com, Grêmio led at the break but conceded twice in four minutes after half-time to lose. The result left them level on points with Vasco, who occupy the first spot inside the Z-4, with Grêmio ahead on goal difference.

Castro pointed to the state title and a Copa do Brasil run that has reached the semi-finals, yet accepted their Brasileirão form has been below par. He rejected any suggestion he had labelled his overall work good, saying only the cup and state campaigns met that mark, and added that the media chase blood.

He also declined to answer a question from a reporter from an identified channel, asking to move on.

On the game, he said a win would have taken them six points clear of the Z-4. He felt the side had chances to make it 2-0 on two occasions but failed to close it out, leaving him disillusioned with the outcome.
