Luis Castro is close to becoming Grêmio’s new head coach after Mano Menezes’ exit. According to Gremistas.net, the 64-year-old Portuguese is in advanced talks and is already being viewed internally as the choice for next season.
Out of work since November, Castro has held several rounds of discussions, including via intermediaries, to shape an agreement. Key points of the deal have now been set.
Finances were central, with the total monthly salary for Castro and his staff around R$ 1.9 million including taxes. The contract length has been set at a minimum of two years to provide stability.
Six staff members will join him: Vitor Severino, assistant coach, Nuno Baptista and Pedro Mané, performance analysts, Roberto Pereira and Nuno Cerdeira, fitness coaches, and Daniel Correia, goalkeeping coach.
Talks were led by new executive director of football Paulo Pelaipe, who will also oversee a squad overhaul in line with Castro’s plans and the club’s budget. To raise funds, the club has moved forward with the sale of forward Alysson, with advanced talks with Aston Villa of England after a 10 million euro offer plus 2.5 million euros tied to performance, equivalent to R$ 63 million and R$ 12.6 million.
