Grêmio confirmed on Sunday afternoon that head coach Luís Castro has been dismissed, and shortly afterwards he departed the Luiz Carvalho training centre.

He had overseen a final training session late in the morning, with the club announcing his exit early in the afternoon. A little over an hour later, he left the site, saying a brief farewell in the car park and greeting supporters.

Castro wished Grêmio well and highlighted winning the Campeonato Gaúcho, knocking out Inter at the Arena to reach the Copa do Brasil semi-finals, and giving academy players their chance.

His staff have also left, including assistants Vítor Severino and Pedro Mané, goalkeeping coach Daniel Correia, performance analyst Nuno Baptista, and fitness coaches Nuno Cerdeira and Roberto Júnior (Betinho).

Saturday’s come-from-behind defeat to Vasco at the Arena, a direct relegation battle, proved the breaking point. The board has turned to the market and opened talks over a return for Renato Gaúcho.

Technical coordinator Luiz Felipe Scolari, Felipão, will take charge against Botafogo on Wednesday in a rescheduled Brasileirão fixture.
