Luis de la Fuente signs new historic Spain contract after World Cup success | OneFootball

Spain have rewarded head coach Luis de la Fuente for his remarkable success by extending his contract.

The 65-year-old’s previous agreement was due to expire in 2028, but the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has now approved a new six-year deal that will keep him at the helm until 2032.

He will oversee the 2028 European Championship, the 2030 World Cup and Euro 2032. Spain’s decision to replace Luis Enrique with De la Fuente in December 2022 has yielded astonishing success.

De la Fuente led Spain to the Nations League title in 2023, the Euro 2024 title, and their second World Cup crown over the summer.

They’ve only suffered one major setback under De la Fuente’s leadership, and that came in the 2025 Nations League final, where they lost to Portugal on penalties.

The new contract is also expected to come with a significant pay rise for the Spanish tactician.

RFEF president Rafael Louzan previously said the coach deserved improved financial terms after his achievements with the national team.

After the contract extension, Louzan said: “We are seeking a project of stability and confidence.

“This proposal is based on confidence in Luis de la Fuente and the sporting project he leads, for a multi-year cycle of competitions and major tournaments.

“We are talking about the most decorated coach in the history of the National Team, and after fourteen years with us, Luis de la Fuente deserves a long future at the RFEF.”

Before taking charge of the senior team, De la Fuente spent almost a decade coaching Spain’s youth sides, winning the 2015 Under-19 Euros and the U21 Euro 2019.

He also led Spain to an Olympic silver medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Since taking over, De la Fuente has built a team capable of competing for major honours while maintaining a strong connection between the different levels of Spanish football.

Spain will co-host the 2030 World Cup with Portugal and Morocco, while Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay will stage a few games as part of the tournament’s centenary celebrations.
