Luis Diaz has confirmed that he held talks with Barcelona over a potential move before joining Bayern Munich from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

The Colombian winger was put up for sale after telling the Merseyside outfit he wished to leave Anfield with two years remaining on his contract.

Barcelona were linked with Diaz after missing out on Athletic Club de Bilbao star Nico Williams, who signed an eight-year contract extension.

However, the Catalan club reportedly decided that the 28-year-old was too expensive a signing to make amid their financial difficulties, choosing instead to bring Marcus Rashford in on loan with an option to buy from Manchester United.

Diaz went on to sign for Bayern for a transfer fee totalling £65.5 million, making it the third-biggest sale in Liverpool‘s history. It was also the second most expensive Bundesliga transfer of the summer, if Nicolas Jackson’s move to Bayern from Chelsea is made permanent at the end of the season.

Speaking to Spanish media after Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League, Diaz revealed that he had indeed spoken with Barcelona.

“I’m very happy to be at this great club,” he told Movistar. “There have been talks (with Barça), which is normal in the transfer market, with several teams.

“I’m very happy with my decision. I’ve made an objective decision about my future, and the most important thing is that I’m coming to a great club. So I’ll try to do my best.”

On the victory over Chelsea, Diaz added: “I’m very happy with the win; it was what we expected. Starting like this is important for the team, so we can stay calm. Now it’s time to rest.”
