Manchester City turned down a potential swap deal involving Julian Alvarez and Liverpool winger Luis Diaz in 2023.

Diaz was open to a move to Manchester City in the 2023 summer transfer window, amid interest from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool, aware of the Colombian’s stance, reportedly countered by proposing a swap deal that would have seen Julian Alvarez move to Anfield in the opposite direction.

According to The Telegraph, City rejected the proposal, insisting the club do not sell to direct rivals. Liverpool, in response, shut down the prospect of Diaz moving to the Etihad in a single arrangement.

“The recruitment team proposed Diaz might move to the Etihad in exchange for Alvarez,” journalist Chris Bascombe revealed.

“Though City’s response was that they did not sell to rivals.”

Alvarez did depart City last summer, signing for Atletico Madrid in an £81.5m deal. The Argentine scored 29 goals in 57 appearances last season.

Diaz remained at Liverpool last season and scored 17 goals in all competitions, helping the Reds to the Premier League title. He left Liverpool this summer to join Bayern Munich for a fee of £65m.

What might have been.
