Recovered from a left knee injury, Flamengo forward Luiz Araújo is back in contention to face Mirassol on Sunday at the Maião in the 23rd round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

“São Paulo were not loyal with us in the sale of Luiz Araújo. We had 30% of the deal and had to accept 20%,” said Mirassol vice-president Juninho Antunes. He told TS Rádio last year.

His €10.5 million move to Lille in 2017 funded Mirassol’s transformation, with the club using its share to build a modern training centre opened in 2018 with a 1,500 m² footprint.

Araújo came through Mirassol’s academy but never played for the first team. São Paulo signed him in 2013 before selling him to Lille four years later, and he retains near idol status among Mirassol fans.

This will be his first professional appearance in the city where he developed, and he has spoken of his excitement about returning to the Maião. Kick-off is 18:30, Brasília time.

The sides also met last August, when he came on in Flamengo’s 2-1 win at the Maracanã. Flamengo then sent a youth side to the reverse fixture at the Maião because of their early trip to the Intercontinental Cup in Qatar, drawing 3-3.
