Five years to the day, Real Sociedad’s Cup triumph and a family birth are entwined. On 3 April 2021, at 3.40am, Luka Castellanos arrived, and by morning his grandfather Félix had enrolled him as a member. Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty in the 17th minute of the second half sealed the trophy against Athletic.
Covid-19 restrictions blocked a parade, but the club let supporters pose with the Cup on the Anoeta pitch. According to Diario Vasco, the Castellanos clan turned up with weeks-old Luka for a keepsake photo, a scene they recreated five years on.
Félix has been with the club since 1976, joining aged 12, and now holds member number 1,708. He later enrolled his son Unai, then grandsons Luka and Nico, with Luka attending daytime fixtures.
Luka is member number 28,422, one of 14 babies registered on their birth day each year, and among 1,090 under-fives on the books. He likes playing outfield and in goal, and names Oyarzabal as his favourite. The earlier newspaper photo still hangs in his grandparents’ living room.
The family plan to head to Seville for the La Cartuja final on 18 April, though Luka will stay in Donostia with Nico and his mother Jennifer Gascón. Félix will go earlier by car with a lifelong friend and stay until Monday, he was at the 1988 final, while for Unai this will be a first.
Whatever happens, Félix’s greatest victory remains the day Luka’s birth and the Cup became one memory.
