Luka Modric voiced rare public shame after Croatia’s 0-7 Nations League collapse to England on Saturday, calling the performance unacceptable.
“I have been here for 20 years, but this is the first time I have felt ashamed after a match. Losing can happen, it is not a problem. But to do it like this, to stain the reputation we have built with so much effort over the years, it is really unacceptable,” he said, as broadcast by HRT.
The 0-7 reverse was the heaviest defeat in the national team’s history.
Modric, who began his senior international career in 2006, appeared visibly emotional.
Five days earlier, Croatia had lost 4-1 in Spain on matchday two of the competition. They face Spain again on Tuesday to conclude the camp, not necessarily the ideal opponent to get back on track.
