Kalvin Phillips pledged to give everything after making his Sheffield United debut, a night that also reunited him with close friend Luke Ayling, who left a five-word message.
As reported by yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the former Leeds United midfielder came off the bench on Monday following his January loan from Manchester City in a 2-1 home defeat to Middlesbrough. Ayling featured for the visitors across the 90 minutes, they scored twice before the break, Patrick Bamford pulled one back for his seventh of the campaign and Joe Rothwell was later shown a straight red.
Ayling’s brief reply underlined the bond forged under Marcelo Bielsa, while former Leeds boss Simon Grayson also commented and the post drew likes from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Gaetano Berardi, Mateusz Klich and Junior Firpo.
Phillips reflected that stepping onto the pitch as a Blade for the first time felt incredible, praised the supporters for driving the team and made clear he is ready to give everything towards the club’s ambitions.
He showed early promise too, punching a sharp pass into Gustavo Hamer in the move that led to Bamford’s goal.
The loan was agreed late on transfer deadline day, and more minutes are planned at Fratton Park on Saturday against Portsmouth. Sheffield United are 17th, eight points behind sixth-placed Wrexham, and still eyeing an outside route to the play-offs.
