Luke O'Nien has addressed Sunderland fans after their latest Premier League victory, with Régis Le Bris' side building momentum and remaining in the European mix.
Tottenham arrived on Wearside under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, but their winless run continued. Sunderland were the sharper, more organised side, and the game turned when Nordi Mukiele's long-range effort deflected off Micky van de Ven to wrong-foot Antonin Kinsky.
The win was a third in matches O'Nien has started, after victories over Leeds United and Newcastle United. Sunderland have conceded only one goal across those games, against Newcastle, and O'Nien was at fault for it. His leadership and intensity have underpinned a back line standing up to high-level opposition.
He reflected on an enjoyable afternoon at the Stadium of Light, with a message to keep building together.
"The thing I'm most proud of is that I've made many mistakes between my debut and now, and there was the one on Derby Day. But if you look at the reaction and the work I have done since then, I didn't just manage to help steer the ship that game, but we limited them to very few chances at all." He was speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle.
"As human beings, we make mistakes, and it is important we face them head-on, put your ego aside and use them as learnings to keep moving forward."
