Luke Williams, 44, is now in charge at Peterborough United in League One, the third tier. According to L'Équipe, after leaving Swansea he worked at Bristol Airport, a stint revealed by a viral photo last summer.
The image on X showed him wearing a high-vis vest in the terminal, and it was later confirmed to be him.
Williams says he wanted to use his time usefully and help others rather than sit idle while waiting for the right opportunity. He saw the role as a way to keep moving.
For several weeks he worked nine to 12 hour shifts from five am, guiding passengers with reduced mobility through check-in, security and boarding. He found it unglamorous but practical and grounding.
After injuries ended his playing hopes at 20, he rebuilt through warehouse and minibus work while starting to coach. He juggled Leyton Orient’s youth by day and sessions with young offenders at West Ham by night, keeping side jobs because he needed money.
As his coaching hours grew, decision-makers noticed his ability to develop players, and Gustavo Poyet at Brighton between 2009 and 2013 gave him a first youth role. He later led Swindon from 2015 to 2017 and managed Swansea from January 2024 to February 2025 before taking the Peterborough post, and is regarded as one of the English coaches to watch.
He does not rule out adding another line to his CV if required, saying he is not fearful of being forgotten and believes good work creates opportunities.
