Tahith Chong has struggled to make a positive impact at Sheffield United since his summer switch from Luton Town
Tahith Chong made the switch from Luton Town to Sheffield United this summer following the Hatters’ relegation to League One, but has failed to make the desired impact since his move to Bramall Lane.
Despite being in two different divisions, both Luton Town and Sheffield United have suffered similar struggles this campaign.
The Hatters endured back-to-back relegations from the Premier League to League One, with neither Rob Edwards nor Matt Bloomfield able to keep the club in the Championship last campaign.
Sheffield United, by contrast, were one game away from the Premier League, but were defeated by Sunderland in the dying embers of the play-off final, resulting in Chris Wilder’s dismissal.
Former Reading and Hull City boss Ruben Selles replaced Wilder in South Yorkshire, and oversaw a huge summer overhaul, bringing in the likes of Japhet Tanganga on a permanent deal from Millwall, whilst Ben Godfrey, Louie Barry, and Chiedozie Ogbene joined on loan.
However, it was their double swoop for Luton duo Mark McGuiness and Tahith Chong which was arguably their most interesting business of the window, with the pair having played regularly in the Hatters’ demise to the third tier the previous season.
Fast-forward to the present day, neither signing has particularly impressed, though Chong, by almost all accounts, has been, thus far, a waste of money.

Chong, alongside McGuiness, swapped Kenilworth Road for Bramall Lane this summer, with the official transfer fee being undisclosed, but rumoured to be £2.5 million rising to £3 million.
Upon his arrival, it was hoped that the Curacao international would make an immediate impact from the wing, challenging Andre Brooks, Tyrese Campbell, and the aforementioned Ogbene for minutes off the right flank, where he is best cutting in on his preferred left foot.
The 26-year-old former Manchester United youth player had just endured a tricky time at Luton, scoring just six goals and grabbing just one assist from his last 63 league appearances across the Premier League and Championship for the Hatters. Unfortunately for the Blades, that form has continued.
Chong failed to start any of his first three games for Sheffield United, and not long after would suffer a knee injury which kept him out of action for the next 13 games, finally making his full debut against Norwich City on matchday 20, grabbing an assist in a 1-1 draw.
Unfortunately for the Curacaon, that has been his only direct goal contribution this season, and he has started just three times since, making a total of 11 league appearances and playing just under 400 minutes to date.
Academy graduate Brooks has largely been the preferred option off the right under Wilder, and with Chong seemingly not favoured by the 58-year-old Sheffield native, it seems unlikely that he will justify the fee paid for him anytime soon.

It’s been a turbulent period for Luton in the last five years, to say the least.
The club have found themselves promoted to the Premier League after defeating Coventry City on penalties in the play-off final, suffered relegation from the top flight after just one season, and then endured another relegation from the Championship in their first season back in the third-tier, all in the space of five years.
They now find themselves in League One, scrapping for a place in the top six after another year of adjustment and an array of incomings and outgoings, both in the playing department and backroom staff.
Led by former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere, in what is his first senior top job in management, the Hatters are aiming for an immediate return to the second-tier.
Some 30 players have been shown the exit door at Kenilworth Road in the past two transfer windows, either permanently or on loan, as the Hatters have gone through a period of mass turnover.
Luton will be pleased by the fee that they recouped for Chong, all things considered, having paid Birmingham City £4 million for the winger's services just two years prior.
In total, Chong made 69 appearances for Luton across all competitions, scoring seven and assisting once, suffering both relegations with the club and failing to make the desired impact.
