Luton Town are preparing to head into a vital summer transfer window as a League One club for the first time since 2019.

In what was a season full of promise and expectation in August, come May, Luton's dreams of an instant return to Premier League football had long been shattered.

Instead, the Hatters came up agonisingly short in their bid to stay in the Championship, finishing in 22nd place thanks to Hull City's superior goal difference.

As such, a number of Luton players will now be considering their futures at Kenilworth Road, as the club look to overhaul the squad this summer ahead of what is hoped will be a much more enjoyable campaign in the third tier next term.

We asked our Luton Town fan pundit, Simon Mills: 'Which one Luton Town player are you concerned about losing the most this summer following relegation to League One?'

Mills said: "Alfie Doughty is the first name that springs to mind.

"Although, I don't think he had a very good season overall. Who knows if that will put people off bidding on him, because he will be expensive - he's on a long-term deal.

"Alfie Doughty definitely is the one that springs to mind. Maybe Thelo Aasgaard as well, but again, it would be very expensive considering he's not been here very long.

"So either one of those two players probably."

Alfie Doughty will surely have pick of Championship clubs this summer - Contract situation should see Luton bag big fee

Like so many Luton players, Alfie Doughty's career has taken quite the turn over the last two seasons.

It was only last season that the 25-year-old was shining in the Premier League for the Hatters, with many Luton fans even calling for him to receive England recognition by then Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

Two goals and eight assists in 37 top flight appearances in a relegated Luton side was a fairly remarkable return for the attack-minded left wing-back, and firmly thrust his name into the households of Premier League fans everywhere.

Fast forward to the present, and the versatile wideman is heading into the summer as a League One player, after an injury-disrupted campaign limited the say he could have on his team's survival bid.

However, entering the prime years of his career, Doughty has proven himself to be a quality performer at both Championship and Premier League level, and as such, he surely won't have much interest in plying his trade in the third tier next term.

Clubs across the second tier, and perhaps even beyond, will surely be eyeing up his situation as having the potential for a real bargain buy this summer, but whilst his signature may not prove too difficult to obtain given his circumstances, it won't come cheap.

That's thanks to him signing a fresh long-term extension with the Hatters back in September last year, the length of which has remained unspecified. However, we can assume that the Englishman has multiple years remaining on his deal at Kenilworth Road.

On top of that, Doughty is said to be earning a weekly wage of £27,500 per figures from Capology, meaning any potential buyer may need to be prepared to hand him a sizeable wage packet too.

A fascinating summer awaits for Doughty. Will he earn a big money move, or might he stay loyal to Luton and help right the wrongs of this season? We shall see...
