Kasey Palmer excelled on loan in the second half of the 2025/26 season at Kenilworth Road
Luton Town were heavily tipped to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking after suffering back-to-back relegations 12 months ago, but that proved to be far from the case.
Just three years ago, the Hatters were gearing up for an unexpected season in the Premier League, but are now preparing for Jack Wilshere's first full season in charge at Kenilworth Road, and a critical one at that after missing out on a place in the third tier play-offs and a shot at promotion.
Reultss on the final day didn't fall in the way of the Bedfordshire side, who, in truth, had done remarkably well in the lead-up to the 46th game to stand a chance of making the top six after an indifferent start to Wilshere's first managerial post.
That said, the former Arsenal and England midfielder will certainly be hopeful that his team can continue to build on the momentum which was generated, as well as the success they tasted in the EFL Trophy final against Stockport County two months ago, having emerged 3-1 victors at Wembley Stadium.
Plenty of focus will be on the League One transfer market too, following the relegations of fellow ex-Premier League sides, Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday, as well as the implementation of new Squad Cost Rules.
However, Luton have now potentially been handed a boost of their own through another club's potential financial shortcomings.

Indeed, the Hatters have already been the subject of transfer discourse in League One ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window.
They are set to complete the acquisition of former Bolton Wanderers' captain, George Johnston, after interest in the defender was exclusively revealed by Football League World, and have also been heavily linked with a move for Barnsley ace, Luca Connell.
However, it also remains to be seen whether Wilshere will reunite with Kasey Palmer on a permanent basis, with the Jamaican international spending the majority of the second half of the season with the club on loan from Hull City.
Palmer, 29, was signed by the Tigers two summers ago from Coventry City, but has struggled to make the desired impact at the MKM Stadium under three different head coaches.
The latter of those, Sergej Jakirovic, sanctioned his loan switch to Kenilworth Road in January after previously questioning the attacking midfielder's mentality following a 2-2 draw with Preston North End last September, in which he was substituted at half-time.
However, Luton were certainly the beneficiaries of said agreement, with the Chelsea academy graduate scoring eight times and posting a further assist in 20 league outings.
And, whilst Palmer's upcoming whereabouts still remains up in the air, it is widely anticipated he will leave the East Yorkshire side following their promotion to the Premier League, and Hull Live have since backed up those claims, stating the midfielder is one of five players who could leave as Hull look to comply with the EFL's financial regulations ahead of the season's official end on June 30th.
City are reportedly needing to generate around £6m ahead of the end of the governing body's current three-year financial reporting period, and failure to do so could lead to a points deduction in the top-flight.
Other names who could leave the club include Mason Burstow, who was successful in the League One play-offs with Bolton on loan.

Palmer had clearly restored his confidence with Luton after an indifferent period with Hull, and given the aforementioned update, Town supporters will also be encouraged by the previous transfer stances outlined by himself and Wilshere.
In April, the Hatters boss outlined that it was "pretty clear" what route the 23-time international would want to take, after he previously opened the door to a permanent deal with his temporary employers.
"Hopefully it can kind of find a solution and I can come back here next season, but to be honest I don’t know, there’s no actual concrete answer. For sure, I’m enjoying the players, being in the dressing room, coming in every day, it’s a perfect fit I think. If it can continue next season then I wouldn’t be against it, but we’ll have to see what happens in the summer," Palmer told Luton Today in April.
However, whilst no concrete solution has been reported yet from a Luton perspective, Hull's stance on the matter has now been given further clarification.
