Luton Town are looking to sign Barnsley’s Luca Connell ahead of the transfer deadline as they look to strengthen Jack Wilshere’s squad.

The Hatters are expected to be in the mix for promotion this season, and they have had a decent start to the campaign, picking up four points from their opening two games.

But, the boss is still seemingly seeking reinforcements ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, and bringing in a new midfielder appears to be among the priorities.

And, journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that they are ‘back in’ for Connell, who is at fellow League One side Barnsley.

It was claimed back in May that Luton were looking at the 25-year-old, but, for whatever reason, a deal didn’t materialise over the past few months.

Nevertheless, that interest hasn’t gone away, and it could be one to watch as Luton look to reach an agreement with the Tykes before the deadline.

Connell is under contract at Oakwell until the summer of 2027, although Barnsley do have a one-year option, which means they won’t be under major pressure to cash in this summer, as he effectively has two years to run on his deal.

The midfielder wasn’t involved in Barnsley’s EFL Cup win over Crewe on Tuesday night, with Daniel Stendel confirming that a minor injury kept him out.

Luca Connell would be ideally suited to Jack Wilshere’s Luton Town

It’s no surprise that Luton are keeping tabs on Connell, as, if you can get him back to his best, he has the potential to be a standout performer in League One.

Furthermore, his attributes are ideally suited to the way that Wilshere wants to play, as he looks to get on the ball regularly, and he tries to play progressive passes, and he also has intensity off the ball.

There’s no denying he has had some difficult moments for Barnsley in recent years, but a fresh start could be just what he needs to start showing his quality on a consistent basis.

Plus, as it feels he has been around for so long, you sometimes forget Connell is only 25, so he should still have a lot to offer, and he fits the profile that Luton would want in the sense that he is approaching his peak years and still has room to develop.

Stendel isn’t going to want to lose someone who has played in the two league games so far, but we know that money talks, and it will all be about what sort of fee Luton are prepared to pay.

If the right number is put up, Barnsley may see it as a chance to reinvest in other areas of the squad, and the fact they haven’t scored in the league yet shows where they are lacking, although Connell would also need to be replaced if he departs.

So, it will be interesting to see how this plays out, but it wouldn’t be a huge shock if this one did get over the line, and, providing Barnsley do use the funds to address their squad, it may be a transfer that suits all parties.
