Lyon failed in Lucas Stassin approach

The transfer window may have closed, however, Olympique Lyonnais may still be in the market for a centre-forward. The club were forced to sell Georges Mikautadze to Villarreal on transfer deadline day, in order to satisfy the promises made to UEFA and the DNCG, which allowed the club to retain its place in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Europa League.

However, it leaves Lyon with a gaping hole up front. Alexandre Lacazette departed on a free transfer at the start of the summer and with Mikautadze gone, too, options are limited for manager Paulo Fonseca. OL can still turn to the free transfer market, whilst signing a domestic player from a fellow French club under the ‘joker’ rule is still a possibility.

L’Équipe have now revealed that Lyon held an interest in AS Saint-Étienne’s Lucas Stassin (20). The Belgian forward was also the subject of interest from Paris FC throughout the transfer window. However, Le Parisien understands that Les Verts set their asking price at €40m for Stassin.

L’Équipe understands that Lyon made contact with Saint-Étienne to sound out a move, but were then deterred by their rivals’ asking price. Talks were therefore halted.
