Lyon frustrated by officiating as late Marseille strike seals another setback

Lyon twice led at the Vélodrome but succumbed late, leaving Paulo Fonseca angry with the officiating and the manner of defeat. According to L'Équipe, he maintained Corentin Tolisso’s 50th minute finish should not have been ruled offside after a VAR judgement for millimetres.

The match tilted in the closing stages, with Marseille’s third arriving in the first minute of stoppage time. The move began with contact on Tyler Morton that was not sanctioned, compounding Lyon’s sense of grievance.

Moussa Niakhaté offered a measured take, noting they lost the ball high up the pitch, there was contact on Morton, then a chain of errors. At 2-2 in added time, they were caught on the counter, a concession he struggled to understand.

Fonseca chose his words carefully. He said he had watched the disallowed goal many times and could not be persuaded there was offside, adding others should make the analysis and that he did not want to dwell on the match.

After 13 straight wins, this was a second successive loss with three conceded, following the 1-3 reverse at Strasbourg the previous weekend. The twin setbacks came against direct rivals for Europe and rekindled memories of last season, when Fonseca’s side sometimes came unstuck defensively. Lyon’s attacking efficiency also deserted them, and twice during the game they were virtually eight points clear of their opponents.
