With Malo Gusto leaving for Chelsea after his short loan spell back this spring, recruiting another right-back had emerged as one of Lyon’s priorities for the transfer window, with the 18-year-old Saël Kumbedi left as the only viable option in that position.
Although the possibility of signing another Argentine full-back in Sevilla’s Gonzalo Montiel had emerged – the defender would have joined compatriot Nicolás Tagliafico at Lyon – L’Équipe indicate that Les Gones have instead opted for Club Brugge’s Clinton Mata.
The Angolan defender will join the Ligue 1 side in a deal worth €5m, and put pen to paper on a three-year deal. The 30-year-old, who has also turned out for Eupen and Charleroi during his career, was first identified as an option by former head of recruitment Bruno Cheyrou. His successor, Matthieu Louis-Jean, has approved the signing. The accusations of sexual abuse that Montiel is the subject of also saw Lyon step back from potentially signing the World Cup winner.
