Lyon should net nearly €7.5m from Bruno Guimaraes’s move to Arsenal, courtesy of a 20% sell-on clause on Newcastle’s profit.

Arsenal confirmed on Saturday the arrival of the 28-year-old Brazil international, capped 48 times, from Newcastle in a deal estimated at £75m, more than €87.5m. According to L'Équipe, Lyon had secured the 20% interest on any future profit four years ago.

Signed from Athletico Paranaense in January 2020, Guimaraes spent two seasons at Lyon, playing 71 games and scoring three goals, before departing in winter 2022 for €50m including bonuses.

That outlay and the reported fee now imply a €37.5m profit for the Magpies, of which a share approaching €7.5m should be due to Lyon.

The windfall is slightly below initial expectations, yet remains welcome for the Rhône club, whose financial position is still troubling.
