Mac Allister reveals he could have left Liverpool over contract situation | OneFootball

Alexis Mac Allister has revealed that he had “options” to leave Liverpool in the summer after the club chose not to offer him a new contract.

The midfielder says he was “very sad” after teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch were both given new deals, but he was not.

The Argentina international, who has two years left to run on his current contract, says that Liverpool told him they were “not in a position” to offer a renewal.

Though the 27-year-old could have departed Anfield in the transfer window, he says he is at the “right club” at the moment.

Mac Allister could have left Liverpool over contract situation

“There was a chance, like everybody knows,” Mac Allister said in Tuesday’s pre-match press conference ahead of the Reds’ UEFA Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.

“I received the news that the club was not in a position to renew my contract, which of course makes me very sad.

“I think everyone can see I give my 100 per cent for this club, every single day in training, I have good games, bad games. I always give my best.

“I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts, which makes me happy. Same time it makes me sad I didn’t get mine.

“There is still time, I will give my 100 per cent until my last day. We will see what happens.

“There was options to leave this summer. Right now I’m in the right club.”

Asked if Liverpool told him why they would not offer him a new contract, Mac Allister replied: “Not really, I did not have any direct conversations. They were with my agent.

“I don’t want to say things they never said, but they said they were not in the position to renew me.”

Mac Allister added that the arrival of Andoni Iraola as head coach had an impact on his decision to remain with Liverpool.

“Definitely, I could see something special when I came back for pre-season,” he said.

“He’s a really good coach, he knows what he wants to do and we are trying to get there.

“I haven’t had any conversations with him about [the contract].

“I think this can be a successful year, that’s why I think this is the right club and the right moment to be here.”

Iraola was diplomatic on the situation, telling reporters that there is plenty of time for contracts to be sorted.

“We all have personal situations with different contracts. The important thing is he wants to be here. We haven’t been together a long time but he has been an important player and I rate him very highly. There is still a lot of time to talk about those contract situations.”
