Maestro responds to queries about new ambassador role

Paul McStay has provided more details on his new role Ambassador role for Willie Haughey’s new Season Ticket Alliance Trust as Celtic gets set to issue season ticket renewal details to supporters…

Posting on his Instagram account the former Celtic captain has given these details to proved details to supporters as those with season tickets get ready to make their decision whether to join in the Haughey plan that could see £10m given to the Alliance Trust to purchase a sizeable shareholding in the club IF 50,000 Celtic season ticket holders register for the initiative.

Paul McStay lives in Australia and has had some feedback from the Celtic supporters there particularly on the overseas support seemingly being excluded from the plan – at this stage anyway – yet they will feel just as committed to the Celtic cause as anyone going to Paradise each week. Indeed through their subscriptions to Celtic TV overseas supporters feel that is is their own season ticket an their merchandise buys are well known to the club as they are posting these purchases out to fans in Australia and around the world.

Surely it would be an easy alteration to add Overseas Celtic TV subscribers to Alliance at the earliest possible moment and with Paul McStay himself being an Australian based Celtic supporter who presumably will watch the matches via Celtic TV, this is something he understands perfectly well.

Last week Paul McStay had this to say via Go Radio about the Alliance and his role in the project that is the initiative of Willie Haughey, who The Maestro has been friends with for 40 years.

“It’s a very important initiative, I’m delighted to be part of it, so whatever is required I’m willing to give up my time to maybe help in a little way to make things better and to be part of a group of Celtic fans that might have a voice going forward and be able to give their thoughts to the club.

“Again, that word unity, everybody just wants the same thing at Celtic. Everybody’s got different opinions but the key thing is that come a Saturday, they’re all there together getting behind the team and supporting them.

“I’ve been friends with Willie for about 40 years and I know where his heart is. He just wants the best for Celtic and that happened last year as well when I was back.

“I met up with the board, the directors at games, then I met up with various supporters clubs from the association, the registered clubs, met up with season ticket holders. Every single person just wanted the best for Celtic and I think that’s where at now.

“We’ve come through a difficult time, a lot of people upset with what’s been happening round about. I think things like this can bring back unity at the club and get us all working together.

“I think we’ve all got different opinions but there’s only one common interest that really matters and that’s that everyone wants the best for Celtic. They want a successful team on the park, a team that entertains and I think hopefully this initiative and one or two others will help that”.

“I’m delighted to be involved and it’s an honour. When Willie asked me and explained what the initiative was about, I thought it was excellent. I believe that the 54,000 season ticket holders that go along each week put a lot of money into the club and support it financially and more importantly vocally at the games.

“But there’s a lot of those season ticket holders who are not shareholders so it’s difficult to voice their opinion at times so I think this is a great vehicle for them to sign up and be a part of something which allows them to give their opinions and be part of something that as a group can put their opinions forward to the club.

“The strength of the organisation will come from the number of season ticket holders that sign up and commit to it, and Willie will then help finance the purchase of shares. The more shares you have, obviously as people know, the more power there is to your voice. I think as a club the fans are the foundation of it.

“This one’s different. This is taking me back to my roots as a young Celtic fan and even back then, when you got your first scarf or strip you became an ambassador then. Anybody involved with Celtic, a fan, is an ambassador for the club at all times.

“To me, this was something I felt I could really support with all my heart and I believe it’s the right thing too to give some of the fans a voice and give their opinion as a group to the club happen.”
