Maghoma dropped? The Norwich City XI that Clement must play v Millwall

We have taken a look at the eleven that Philippe Clement should name as Norwich City take on Millwall, including the dropping of Paris Maghoma.

Having headed into the season expecting to continue their fine form at the back end of last year, Norwich City began their campaign with a surprise defeat at Carrow Road.

Following their hammering of Milton Keynes Dons, winning 4-1 in the first round of the EFL Cup, Norwich will have exuded confidence ahead of their opening day clash in the Championship against West Bromwich Albion.

The better side for much of the first hour or so, The Canaries eventually succumbed to a 2-1 loss at home to The Baggies, leaving Philippe Clement and supporters frustrated.

Clement has done a fine job since replacing Liam Manning at the helm of City but the former Rangers and Monaco boss may have some choices to make ahead of their trip to The Den to face Millwall.

We reckon that at least two changes should be made, including the dropping of former Brentford midfielder Paris Maghoma for a less conservative option.

GK: Vladan Kovacevic

In between the sticks will remain Vladan Kovacevic. Arriving from Sporting CP last summer, the Bosnian has established himself as one of the better goalkeepers in the division but will be a tough frustrated by his commitment only to be beaten by Jimmy-Jay Morgan’s cross for Aune Heggebo’s controversial strike at Carrow Road last week.

RB: Jack Stacey

Having started against MK Dons, we think that Jack Stacey should return to the side at right-back, at the expense of left-back Ben Chrisene – who kept his place in the side after performing well against the League One outfit.

CB: Harry Darling

Harry Darling is perhaps the player under most pressure from supporters with the new loan signing of Brazilian defender Bruno Alves but the former Swansea City man should keep his place for now.

CB: Jose Cordoba

The Canaries back-line was hardly glittering in the second half against Albion and Panama international centre-back Jose Cordoba didn’t shine to usual capabilities but will remain at the back here.

LB: Kellen Fisher

Norwich’s fine form in the second half of last season, especially right at the end, saw Fisher playing out of position at left back to accommodate Stacey and we think that will be a tempting move once again for Clement.

DM: Pelle Mattsson

Vice-captain, Pelle Mattsson settled in well to life at Norwich last season. Substituted late on against West Brom for a more attacking approach, the Dane should retain his spot once again in the middle of the park.

DM: Kenny McLean

Mattsson’s partner is perhaps up for debate with Jacob Wright and Sam Field vying for that role but, for now, club captain Kenny McLean does remain a key cog for Clement.

RW: Andre Brooks

Big money summer signing Andre Brooks was far from his best against West Brom but the former Sheffield United man will likely have his spot on the wing for a while yet after an £8 million move.

AM: Anis Ben Slimane

Anis Ben Slimane was excellent against MK Dons and many Norwich supporters may well be frustrated by his substitution last week in the 71st minute when the game remained goalless.

LW: Oscar Schwartau

The big call we reckon that Clement should make is the ‘left-sided’ role. Paris Maghoma nominally played there and the talented midfielder did interchange with Ben Slimane. Still young and with immense potential, Maghoma may well find himself a key regular at some stage this year but, up against a Millwall back-line that is unlikely to bomb on and will afford Norwich time on the ball, a better goal threat in the form of Oscar Schwartau may well be the preferred option.
