Looking to get off to a quick start in the all-crucial second leg in Saarland, Heidenheim's Marvin Pieringer had the first effort of the match, sending a decent left-footed effort towards goal that Nicolas Kristof saved well.
However, just four minutes later, the visitors did take the lead through Matias Honsak. Leo Scienza, who had been lively in the opening period after being given the nod for a start following his exploits off the bench on Thursday, played Honsak through on goal, and the forward made absolutely no mistake in converting.
With Heidenheim leading the tie for the first time across the two legs thus far, Elversberg struggled to reproduce the same attacking spark they had for large periods of the first leg.
That was the case until the 30th minute, when some lovely play on the edge of the box concluded in a neat Tom Zimmerschied ball towards onrushing captain Robin Fellhauer, who calmly slotted into the back of the net to bring the scores level once again.
Just a minute into the second half, Elversberg thought that they had gone on to get their noses in front through Fisnik Asslani, who prodded home from close range following a scramble in the box. However, a VAR check adjudged Lukas Petkov to be offside, prompting referee Sascha Stegemann to rule the goal out.
Despite Elversberg being in firm control of the encounter, the hosts were unable to create anything of note throughout large periods of the second half. Heidenheim, on the other hand, has not had a prolonged period of possession since the first half.
Attempting to gain back momentum, Frank Schmidt turned to Niklas Dortsch and Paul Wanner, with the visitors struggling.
And as the game reached its final stages, the madness would arrive in added time.
Looking the most lively for Heidenheim across the two legs, it was Leo Scienza who would find the back of the net in sensational fashion in the 95th minute. The Brazilian forward twisted and turned inside the box, before firing past Kristof fantastically.
With little to no time remaining, it would be confirmed that Heidenheim will be playing Bundesliga football once again next term. Heidenheim will play their third successive top-flight campaign.
