Maguire hails vital Man United win over Ipswich as Fernandes hat-trick ends ‘crisis’ chatter at Old Trafford | OneFootball

Harry Maguire has said it was important for Manchester United to beat Ipswich Town and avoid the 'crisis talk' of a winless start to the Premier League season.

Manchester United bounced back from a shock setback at Hull City on the opening weekend with a 5-2 win over newly-promoted Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick's side fell behind to Leif Davis' goal, but recovered to claim a convincing win. Bruno Fernandes slammed home an equaliser before half-time, as part of a hat-trick for the recently anointedPFA Player of the Year.

Maguire was involved in the second as his effort deflected in for an own goal off Jacob Graves. The ball struck Maguire's arm in the build-up, but was allowed to stand due to Premier League rules regarding accidental handballs and the immediate impact on goals.

Greaves then conceded a penalty for Fernandes to convert for Manchester United's third, before the Portuguese midfielder turned in a third for his hat-trick. A fifth arrived through Bryan Mbeumo, courtesy of a Fernandes assist, to seal the win before Chupa Akpom's late consolation for the visitors.

Speaking toSky Sports, Maguire said it was vital for Manchester United to shut down the 'noise' that would have arrived with another poor performance.

"We started the game really well. The goal knocked us back a lot. When you lose at this club, there's a lot of noise and you feel like you're in a crisis again. We spoke about it at half-time. We proved we could've got more.

On his goal, Maguire said he was pleased United benefited from a change in accidental handball laws.

"I haven't seen it back, so I can't really comment. I know it was tight. It wasn't handball on purpose. I dragged the shot wide and I think that's why it stood. It's a new rule. We deserved that win and that bit of luck.

"Last week was disappointing. We prepared all pre-season for the game against Hull. Thankfully, we managed to get the three points. It's a long season and we'll be ready for the next one."
