Mainz midfielder Paul Nebel will miss the start of the 2026/27 DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga after sustaining an adductor injury in pre-season.

The club said in a statement that he would not be available in the coming weeks, adding that the length of his absence depends on his individual healing process.

The 23-year-old was injured during the final training session of Mainz's pre-season camp in Austria.

He went down clutching the left side of his groin and was treated on the pitch. After an initial assessment on the sidelines he left with a slight limp, before subsequent examinations confirmed the setback.

Mainz open with a DFB-Pokal trip to Krieschow, then start their Bundesliga campaign at home to newly promoted Paderborn. Nebel is set to miss at least those opening fixtures.
