Valencia’s problems at right-back are mounting, with Dimitri Foulquier potentially sidelined for many weeks. His absence would add to Rubén Iranzo being out, while Thierry Rendall remains in a readjustment phase that leaves Carlos Corberán with big calls to make.
He has pushed through the pain in recent months, but a knee issue has now forced a halt and he did not even make the squad against Real Madrid. After the match, Corberán said Foulquier would spend a period away from the group. According to Cadena Cope, there is concern at the club that he could miss the second half of the campaign.
The full-back had not been performing well and he will miss a large number of games. The right side will fall to Thierry Rendall, who has struggled with fitness this season and is seeking stability in both form and availability.
Another option, used against Real Madrid, saw Unai Núñez start on the right and operate in a hybrid role between right-sided centre-back in a back three and full-back depending on the phase. That approach gave Luis Rioja greater licence to break forward.
With that flank thinning, Corberán must now shape his selections for the coming fixtures while Thierry aims to regain rhythm and reliability.
