Is Robbie Savage heading to London Road to fill the Peterborough United managerial vacancy?

Former Premier League and EFL midfielder Robbie Savage has been linked with the vacant Peterborough United manager's job - and he could be heading to the Cambridgeshire outfit as he's poised for talks with an unnamed club.

A divisive figure on the pitch, as a player many rival fans loved to hate, Savage played over 600 times professionally at club level, as well as being capped by Wales 39 times.

Moving into management with Macclesfield in 2024 though following a period on the board of directors, as well as being director of football, Savage won promotion with the Silkmen to the National League North, before then jumping ship to Forest Green Rovers - a level above in the National League - in the summer of 2025.

Backed with a raft of new signings by owner Dale Vince, which included raiding his former club Macclesfield for four of their players, Savage was expected to contend for the National League title with the Gloucestershire outfit, but they could only muster up a seventh-placed finish in English football's fifth tier.

They were dumped out of the play-offs though by Boreham Wood at the first stage, but Savage has been given another go by Vince at Forest Green, but they currently sit just 12th in the division after 10 games played.

And they are some 12 points adrift of current league leaders Boreham Wood - Savage would be under pressure normally, but on the contrary, there appears to be interest in his services.

It was reported over the weekend by talkSPORT's Alex Crook that Savage was emerging as a serious contender to land the Peterborough United vacancy after Luke Williams was relieved of his duties following Posh's poor start to 2026-27.

United owner Darragh MacAnthony was quick to deny that anyone was closing in on the role, confirming that interviews were set to begin this coming week and approaches potentially made to clubs whose managers they want to speak to.

And as now reported by BBC Gloucestershire, Forest Green have confirmed to them that Savage is talking to another club over moving there, and as a result, he will not be in the dugout when they host Wealdstone in National League action on Tuesday night at The New Lawn.

It can be widely assumed that the club in question will be Peterborough, given the previous links - Wycombe Wanderers also have a vacancy after Michael Duff's axing and Bradford City do too with Graham Alexander moving on to Preston North End, but it's highly likely to be Posh that are talking to the 51-year-old.

It may be a case of Peterborough just wanting to talk to Savage to see what he's about rather than him being the top candidate for the job, but either way, Posh fans have been reacting to the possibility of the ex-Birmingham and Leicester City midfielder taking the job at London Road.

This fan believes it would be embarrassing if Savage was appointed as Williams' successor.

Another supporter believes that others shouldn't get too ahead of themselves, and that there may not even be a big chance that Savage gets appointed despite an interview taking place.

One Posh fan would actually rather Savage be appointed than some of the other potential names being discussed, including Karl Robinson.

This Peterborough supporter though does not agree, claiming it would be a 'diabolical' appointment.

It's evident that a potential hiring of Savage at London Road would be divisive to say the very least, but it appears that MacAnthony at least wants to discuss the role with him, if not hire him outright.
