Corinthians have not renewed Ángel Romero’s contract, which expired at the turn of 2025 to 2026. A fan poll showed strong backing for the move amid debate over his recent form and long service.
According to Meu Timao, 68% of respondents said Romero’s cycle had ended, with a further 10.5% agreeing due to cost-cutting. Combined, 78.5% supported the non-renewal.
Opposition came from 21.6% of voters. Of those, 14% felt he remained an important dressing-room leader, and 7.6% argued the exit was a mistake given the current transfer ban restricting new signings.
Despite reduced minutes and competition from academy players, Romero left to a wave of tributes. Club and player exchanged messages on social media, and he posted an open letter recalling his journey and bond with Corinthians.
Corinthians also chose not to extend Talles Magno’s loan. Dorival Júnior starts 2026 with fewer attacking options, namely Yuri Alberto, Memphis Depay, Gui Negão, Vitinho, Kayke, Dieguinho, Pedro Raul and Héctor Hernández, the latter currently sidelined from the squad.
Across two spells at Parque São Jorge, Romero made 377 appearances, scoring 67 goals and supplying 37 assists. He featured in title-winning campaigns in the Brasileirão in 2015 and 2017, the Paulista in 2017, 2018 and 2025, and the 2025 Copa do Brasil, his final trophy with the club.
