Lyon are poised to bank a much-needed late-window sale as Malick Fofana closes on a move to Sunderland for more than 35 million euros, bonuses included. Arsenal had led the race on Monday but declined to meet Lyon's terms.

The Athletic reports that Sunderland returned to the front of the queue after late talks in London failed to bridge the gap.

The north of England club, coached by Frenchman Régis Le Bris, made an initial approach in recent days after missing out on Igor Paixao. Fofana, 21, and his entourage rejected that, as they did Hull City's interest.

He has since been convinced by the Black Cats' project, and Lyon authorised him to travel to England on Tuesday midday. He is due to sign a five-year contract once he has completed a medical.

Discussions over the transfer structure are not yet fully concluded. Lyon are already working on a replacement, with Stade de Reims winger Keito Nakamura, 26 and under contract until 2028, among their priority options.
