A 45-year-old man from the Gateshead area has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after alleged racist abuse at the Tyne-Wear derby.

Northumbria Police confirmed on 1 April that the suspect was arrested on 31 March. The force stressed that racial abuse has no place in football and said it will continue working with both clubs and supporters to tackle criminality at matches.

He has since been released on police bail with robust conditions pending further enquiries.

The referee briefly halted the derby at St James' Park on 22 March after Sunderland full-back Lutsharel Geertruida reported alleged racist abuse from the terraces.

Sunderland won the match 1-2.
