Tijjani Reijnders starred in a largely dominant Netherlands 1-3 win over Tunisia on Thursday night to secure top spot in Group F.
Ronald Koeman’s side raced into the lead before the three-minute mark when Denzel Dumfries’ dangerous cross forced an own goal from Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri, before Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey tapped in a Virgil van Dijk knockdown.
The Oranje dictated tempo with ease for the remainder of the contest, rarely needing to step out of first gear against their largely sluggish opponents.
A rare second-half defensive lapse briefly halted the Dutch cruise when Manchester City’s Tijjani Reijnders lost track of his marker from a corner, allowing Hazem Mastouri to glance a header into the bottom corner.
However, Jan Paul van Hecke quickly snuffed out any hopes of a Tunisian comeback by nodding home a near-post corner – taken by the aforementioned Manchester City midfielder – that took a deflection past the goalkeeper.
The victory sets up a knockout tie against 2022 semi-finalists Morocco in Monterrey on Tuesday, while Tunisia crash out at the bottom of the group after suffering three consecutive defeats and conceding 12 goals.
