Man City book Wembley final with Arsenal after 5-1 aggregate win over Newcastle

Manchester City have booked their place in the Carabao Cup final with Arsenal after brushing Newcastle United aside at the Emirates Stadium.

The Magpies were always going to need some luck to overturn a two-goal deficit from the first leg but that job became even more difficult just seven minutes in.

The opening goal of the second leg game through Omar Marmoush who had the ball on the left with Dan Burn coming across to snuff out a shot. However, the defender's block only helped the ball loop over Aaron Ramsdale to make it 1-0 on the night 3-0 on aggregate.

Newcastle did have chances themselves but when a second goal came it was hard to see any way back.

Just seconds after James Trafford saved a Keiran Trippier cross Tijjani Reijnders brought the ball forward with Antoine Semenyo putting a low cross in that Trippier was back to get something on to only to see Marmoush head in from close range after his block.

A third came about three minutes later from a similar situation: deep in the City half as the home side broke quickly with superior numbers. Again it was Reijnders carrying the ball, he found Semenyo whose shot was blocked allowing the Dutchman to finish.

With Newcastle 3-0 at half-time and 5-0 on aggregate, Eddie Howe had to make changes with Yoane Wissa, Jacob Murphy, and Antony Elanga all coming on. The Magpies' boss had already had to make one change just before the break when Anthony Gordon hobbled off to be replaced by Harvey Barnes.

The visitors deserve credit for continuing to attack when there could be the temptation to control the damage and they pulled one back in style.

There was 62 minutes gone when Anthony Elanga picked up the ball on the right, skipped easily past Nico O'Reilly before curling the ball into the corner beyond the reach of James Trafford – a fine strike from the former Manchester United man.

The ball was in the City net again not long after that consolation Elanga found Wissa who played in a low cross for Barnes – the finish was a good one but Wissa was offside in the build-up.

Although there was no danger in Newcastle getting back into the tie, Pep Guardiola made a triple change of his own bringing the trio of Rodri, Rayan Cherki, and Erling Haaland on for the final 20 minutes.

Haaland had chances from the bench but wasn’t able to get onto the scoresheet on an evening where 3-1 seemed like a low scoring game for sheer number of efforts from both sides.

After knocking out the holders 5-1 on aggregate, Manchester City have the chance to go on and win the trophy should they defeat the current league leaders at Wembley on March 22nd.
