Man City dealt blow to Tottenham and Newcastle chances of January signing

Tottenham want to improve Thomas Frank’s squad in January, and the same can be said for Newcastle and Eddie Howe. However, it is now considered unlikely that either side brings in James Trafford from Man City.

Tottenham have concerns with Guglielmo Vicario after a number of high-profile errors this season, and this is also the case for Nick Pope at Newcastle. Both clubs are aware that a goalkeeper signing would make sense, but while they are each attentive to Trafford’s situation at the Etihad, they are unlikely to have an opportunity to make a move when the transfer window opens next month.

As per Football Insider, Man City have no plans to let Trafford leave in January, despite the 23-year-old being unhappy with his playing time since his summer move from Burnley.

“I think obviously Trafford’s not happy at the minute because he’s playing second fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma. I think it’s probably coming down to Trafford’s ambition to be in that England squad for the World Cup, but if he’s not playing, it’s going to be hard to be in Thomas Tuchel’s plans. That’s probably why speculation over his future has intensified in recent weeks.

“We know Newcastle are long-term admirers, Aston Villa have been mentioned as well with the ongoing uncertainty around Emiliano Martinez’s future, Spurs have also been linked as well. But I just don’t see City letting him go in January despite the player being unhappy and wanting to play. City won’t to weaken their squad in January and leave themselves short in that goalkeeping department.”

Is it necessary for Tottenham or Newcastle to sign James Trafford in January?

There is no doubt that Tottenham or Newcastle would benefit from signing Trafford, but the likelihood is that a January move is not worth breaking the bank over. As such, it may be best to wait until next summer when Man City are more likely to play ball.
