Big trio missing as City chase domestic treble

Manchester City were without three key men for their 2-1 win over Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals.

City were heavy favourites going into their tie against the second-tier side, but were faced with a trickier test than many anticipated.

Finn Azaz curled in a superb opener to stun Wembley Stadium with ten minutes to go, but Jeremy Doku and Nico Gonzalez turned the game around for Pep Guardiola’s men, with their domestic treble hopes still alive.

Matheus Nunes, City’s first-choice right-back this season, went down in the first half off the ball, handing them a fresh injury concern, but the Portuguese played on and completed the whole 90 minutes.

Rodri

Rodri hobbled off in the 2-1 win over Arsenal and missed the 1-0 win at Burnley which took City top of the league last week.

The midfielder went off with a groin problem as he was replaced by Nico at the Etihad Stadium.

He sat out at Wembley too, with Guardiola saying that he had “no idea” when the Spaniard would return, taking it “day by day”.

Ruben Dias

Portuguese central defender Dias has been out with an ankle injury since the start of April.

The former Benfica man was believed to be close to a return to action, but Guardiola said last week that the Burnley fixture would come too soon for the defender, who was not in the matchday squad for the FA Cup semi-final either.

“He’s still not ready,” Guardiola said of Dias.

The blow of Dias’ absence has been softened by Marc Guehi and Abdukodir Khusanov’s growing partnership at the heart of defence, as well as John Stones’ return from a thigh problem and Nathan Ake’s availability.

£100million man Gvardiol has been out with a broken leg since the turn of the year.

The defender fractured his tibia in the draw with Chelsea in early January, with Guardiola revealing at the time that his versatile defender would be “out for a long time”.

It remains to be seen when he might be able to make a return to action, with time ticking away this term and looking ahead to the upcoming World Cup this summer.
